“If in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work.”
— Thich Nhat Hanh, Being Peace
Peace begins within. If we are at peace within, we also radiate it to those around us; we become channels of reconciliation and love.
It is not merely through dialogue with others that peace begins. Peace begins long before we even talk with others. It starts in our own hearts.
Let us remember those times when we were just so happy and at peace. During those times, wasn’t it so easy to smile? Sometimes, we don’t even know that a radiant smile is already beaming from our faces. It shines on those we meet and sooner or later, they begin to smile, too! That’s when peace begins.
“When the ways of people please the Lord,
he causes even their enemies to be at peace with them.”
— Proverbs 16:7 (NRSVCE)
“Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.” — Mother Teresa
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
