I have asked someone better suited to serious data analysis than me to go through the shadowcanman X claims properly. Some of the figures may prove correct, others may not, and some may be technically accurate while being presented in ways that make them almost meaningless. What boils my piss is watching the hard right take this stuff as gospel almost the moment it appears.

Found some massive amounts of money awarded to LGBTQ and Asylum/Migrant in 2020. All hidden under separately under "Coronavirus Community Support Funds".

The latest claim is that “massive amounts of money” awarded to LGBTQ and migrant organisations in 2020 were “hidden” under the Coronavirus Community Support Fund. They were not hidden. The fund was a publicly announced £200 million government programme, administered by the National Lottery Community Fund, designed to help charities and vulnerable communities through Covid. Its grants were published, not hidden. Search those records for migrant, asylum, LGBT or trans and you will find grants containing those words. Add them together and you may get a large number. None of that establishes corruption, concealment or even unusual spending.

Last night we had our first major breakthrough into the mainstream. Thanks to @MartinDaubney, @PatrickChristys and @GBNEWS for covering the National Lottery story following on from our findings last week. We achieved that just 14 days after starting this project, and believe

We saw the same thing with his National Lottery work. GB News picked it up and promoted an “exclusive” claiming that more than £140 million had gone to “pro-migrant charities”. The £143 million figure was already sitting on the National Lottery’s own website, which openly states that more than 2,500 projects and organisations supporting refugees have received that amount since 1994. Publicly declared spending was passed through a political filter and came back as a revelation.

From blowing the lid off the Lottery scandal, I realised two things: Most people had absolutely no idea where the money was going. Once they found out, they were more than willing to boycott, challenge and tell everybody they knew. So I am now running TWO workstreams from this

Shadowcanman’s own five-year search claimed to find 1,694 grants worth £114.7 million using terms such as refugee, asylum, migrant, migration and immigration. GB News supplied the rest. Support for refugees became money for “pro-migrant charities”. Presenters talked about left-wing activism and institutional capture. By the time the clip returned to X, the original spreadsheet search looked as though it had been independently verified by a broadcaster.
This is the part I find most disturbing. The conclusion already exists before the search begins. Britain has been captured by migrants, charities, “woke” institutions and liberal elites. The databases are then mined for anything that appears to confirm it. A large number is pulled out, usually without much context, and circulated as proof. Few people ask what proportion of total spending it represents (normally a small percentage), what the grant actually paid for (and did it achieve its goals) or whether anything improper happened at all.
There may be genuine discoveries buried in this work. Open data and AI make it possible to search enormous quantities of public information very quickly, and waste or corruption should be exposed wherever it exists. But a keyword match is not an investigation and a large number is not an argument. Words such as “hidden”, “massive” and “woke” are doing much of the work.
Once GB News puts it on television, the distinction becomes even harder to recover. The spreadsheet acquires authority, the framing becomes fact and the hard right moves on to the next outrage before anyone has properly checked the last one. That is the modus operandi of the online right’s rage machine.
