As Lake Huron’s North Shore continues to roast under a heat dome, vulnerable residents are reminded to seek out cooling centres in their communities to ride out the worst of the temperatures in air-conditioning.
Most municipalities are listing their public library branches as reliable air-conditioned environments, but folks should check opening and closing times carefully.
Sault Ste. Marie lists both their James L. McIntyre Centennial Library (Open Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and the North Branch Public Library (Open Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) as cooling centres, along with public pools, fountains, splash pads and community centres.
The Town of Thessalon received a federal grant for air-conditioning in their Marina buildings. Residents intending to check out this Thursday’s Thessalon Farmer’s Market at the Marina should have a place to stop and cool off as well.
The City of Greater Sudbury is providing twelve hour availability to air conditioning at its Energy Court site so those experiencing homelessness can escape the punishing heat.
Elliot Lake is advising locals in need about its library hours.
The entire Sudbury to Sault Ste. Marie North Shore corridor is under an Environment Canada Heat Warning. This warning is expected to last through Friday, July 3rd, with the hottest conditions predicted into Thursday. 33 degrees Celsius is an expected high in urban centres. Daytime minimums of 18 to 22 degrees Celsius will provide little relief.
Environment Canada also warns that high heat can negatively affect air quality, so keep an eye on that Air Quality Health Index, especially if you are high risk for respiratory trouble.
With heat often comes thunderstorms and even the potential for extreme weather events like tornadoes. Environment Canada lists the North Shore as under a moderate storm risk starting today.

Environment Canada’s advice for dealing with a heat emergency:
Take action to protect yourself and others – extreme heat can affect everyone’s health. Determine if you or others around you are at greater risk of heat illness. Check on older adults, those living alone and other at-risk people in-person or on the phone multiple times a day.
Watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others. Signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue. Stop your activity and drink water.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency! Call 9-1-1 or your emergency health provider if you, or someone around you, is showing signs of heat stroke which can include red and hot skin, dizziness, nausea, confusion and change in consciousness. While you wait for medical attention, try to cool the person by moving them to a cool place, removing extra clothing, applying cold water or ice packs around the body.
Drink water often and before you feel thirsty to replace fluids.
Close blinds, or shades and open windows if outside is cooler than inside.
Turn on air conditioning, use a fan, or move to a cooler area of your living space. If your living space is hot, move to a cool public space such as a cooling centre, community centre, library or shaded park.
