When I started thinking about resurrecting Sharp Skirts earlier this year, I spent some time noodling around the internet looking for women-focused media. It was an unfortunately brief period of time. You’ve got The 19th, with vital political coverage, and… um… anything else? There are a ton of great Substacks of course - Sassy’s Jane Pratt and Jessica Valenti’s Abortion, Every Day come to mind. And of course the fluffier stuff like Vogue and Cosmo. But Feministing? Gone. Jezebel? Au revoir. Bustle? Appears to still be alive but run by AI.
So I was overjoyed to stumble across Dame Magazine, a site that looks alive and well and covering some damn good stuff. As with most (good) media these days, it’s reader funded so send some cash their way if you’re so inclined.
Though the style is too chaotic for my taste, there is not a shred of doubt that it is singularly hers. While I have figured out my voice in writing, I’ve never really landed on a visual voice, so I’m always impressed when someone has the confidence to assert theirs.
I’d love to see how others use their voices visually, whether through interiors or clothes. Show me in the comments!
Other People’s Clothes
I’m not sure this book ever figures out what it wants to be, but who among us does? A true-crime commentary? A thriller with a twist? Chick lit? All are possibly true. It kept me invested throughout, though, and the issue of how and why women use their voices is very much a theme. Give it a read and let me know what you think.
Do you have a business you want to promote? A side gig you want to hustle? Or maybe you just want to tell us what your superpower is. No matter the intent, if you’re reading this, we want to tell the world about you. Shoot us a note and we’ll make it happen!
You know, I spent more time than I should have looking for the perfect quote to sum up what an absolute shit show this Epstein business is, but there is not just one so instead I encourage you to gleefully read about it and then laugh at this:
