It’s time to do some serious Summer Reading prep and while reading is its own reward it is so much fun to get a treat when you’re done. Here are some old and new programs for kids and teens that incentivize summer reading. Check your local library, they almost always have a program for reading and they can help with picking books to read. You’ll also want to check your state newspaper or city magazine for local programs. Here in Atlanta, the Hawk’s have a program as well as others. If you’re local, check them out HERE.
Instead of a free book or treat kids can earn play points at Chuck E. Cheese. The Big Mouse is cool because they don’t only have treats for reading, but habit trackers for brushing your teeth and other good habits. Download and print the log reading minutes here.
Participation is a fun and easy way for kids to earn free books. They simply read a designated number of books – library books, books borrowed from friends or books bought at Barnes & Noble – write about their favorite part in our Reading Journal, and bring a completed Reading Journal to a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Children then choose their free book from the books listed on the Reading Journal and collect their free book from a store near them during July and August.
B&N is great because not only do they provide a log and prize they have a very good archive of booklists so you and your summer reading buddy can find books to dive into. The drawback is you have to read from their provided list of books. Here is the log. You’ll have to read 8 to get the free book and bookmark. Check them out HERE.
This one is super straightforward. You’ll just read 4 books, log them and turn in your sheet to a Books a Million associate for a treat. What’s the treat? I am not really sure, but a treat is a treat!
