One of the benefits of renting a basement in Pierre during the legislative session is getting to spend time with this precious critter!
Meeting with South Dakota National Guard Adjutant General Mark Morrell, Secretary of Public Safety Bob Perry, and Representative John Shubeck on drone legislation. My drone bill HB 1280 passed unanimously out of the Military and Veterans Affairs Committee. It goes to the House floor next week.
Funding for the Sturgis Readiness Center for our South Dakota National Guard was approved by the House. HB 1041 is $2.35M General Funds and $8M Federal Funds.
More meetings in the Joint Committee on Appropriations. We greeted the Civil Air Patrol to our committee meeting. Regarding other issues. We heard from the Bureau of Finance and Management about the new software update called Project Bison. We continue to have multiple bill hearings. We also got good news that our revenues are up. We’ll see how this affects upcoming budget requests.
Meeting with constituents about legislation.
Heavy mining equipment near Piedmont. I fought hard to have responsible mining legislation when it comes to blasting. Unfortunately, my bills failed. Senator John Carley and Representative Kathy Rice fought for common sense mining reforms. Those failed, as well. We will continue to fight for our constituents and the citizens of South Dakota.
Fighting for an in vitro fertilization reporting bill. This was a pro-life bill. It didn’t prevent IVF. Right to Life, Family Voice, Catholic Conference, Concerned Women for America and others supported it. Senator John Carley’s sister and his IVF conceived niece testified in support of this bill. It failed. Sad.
Speaker of the House Jon Hansen (a man I deeply admire and respect) oversees the 101st Legislative Session. This day we opened the floor session to the sound of the bagpipes played by Representative David Kull.
Upcoming Bills: Lots of property tax reform and data center bills.
2026 is the Year of the Bible. Understanding the Word Ministries is handing out personalized Bibles to all legislators in the 50 states.
Please pray that I will walk in humility and have wisdom as I serve all South Dakotans. Thank you for trusting me to serve you.
God bless,
District 29 Representative Terri Jorgenson
