EXCLUSIVE: Jacob Chase has ideas for where Insidious 7 could take the horror franchise.

Chase, who broke out in the horror genre with his sleeper hit Come Play, takes the charge on the latest installment in the James Wan and Leigh Whannell-created series, also penning the script based on a story he developed with The Conjuring Universe alum David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Though again featuring Lin Shaye's Elise, Insidious: Out of the Further generally focuses on a new cast of characters, namely that of Amelia Eve's Gemma, a single mother who finds she not only has the ability to traverse The Further, but also bring souls into the real world.

As his film geared up to hit theaters, ScreenRant's Brandon Zachary interviewed Jacob Chase to discuss Insidious: Out of the Further. When asked about his thoughts of potential returning for either Insidious 7 or taking the reins on another horror franchise, the writer/director confirmed that he's "certainly very open to making another" in the Blumhouse franchise, praising it as being "such a good experience" and teasing that "there are more places to take these characters."

However, Chase then cautioned that he's "very interested in making my own lore for my own franchises," though kept it a secret as to which ideas or characters he's looking to build into a multi-title release. Chase concluded by acknowledging that he's "looked up to James and Leigh for my entire filmmaking career," and thus wants to "create my own Insidious," but said there is one other franchise he'd love to be a part of:

Jacob Chase: To answer your other question, I love the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. I love making dream sequences come to life, so that's something I've always thought about.

The trajectory of the Insidious franchise has been a curious one over the past few films, as the Lin Shaye-fronted The Last Key was initially expected to be the final installment, particularly given it set up Elise's appearance in the original movie, thus closing the prequel timeline. However, once it became the franchise's highest-grossing film at the time, Blumhouse understandably kept things alive with The Red Door, which again felt like a finale in properly ending the Lamberts' story.

However, once that film again set a new franchise-high record at the box office, Sony and Blumhouse immediately got to work on a sixth film, which eventually took shape as Chase's Insidious: Out of the Further. Though continuing the franchise's 15-year streak of "Rotten" scores from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the new film has already gotten off to a strong start at the box office, earning $3 million in its Thursday previews, the second-highest for the series behind The Red Door's $5 million record.

If this builds to yet another financially successful run for the franchise, Blumhouse will certainly look to begin development on Insidious 7 right away. As to whether this will involve Chase and his new cast remains unclear, as, without diving into spoilers, Out of the Further's ending did generally wrap things up for Gemma and the others. The new film did, however, tease that Josh and Dalton sealing their door to The Further in The Red Door's ending has resulted in other evils being unleashed, thus creating other paths for Gemma and Chase to return and face new threats.

That being said, there is also the possibility that a so-called Insidious 7 may not be a direct sequel to any prior film, but instead that of the long-gestating spinoff Thread. Despite being announced in early 2022, with Moon Knight's Jeremy Slater set to write and direct, and Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani coming onboard as stars a year later, only to have remained in development hell with no clear updates. Should the spinoff-like format of Out of the Further work with audiences and the box office, Blumhouse could very well push for Thread to finally get off the ground as the franchise's seventh release.
