Have you ever wondered why dishonest, cruel, or corrupt people so often appear to enjoy wealth, influence, comfort, and success?
My latest essay for Crisis Magazine reverses the familiar problem of evil: “Why do bad things happen to good people?” and instead considers the equally difficult question: Why do good things happen to bad people?
Drawing upon Psalm 73, Job, the parable of the rich fool, and Christ’s warning that much will be required from those who have received much, I explore the difference between material prosperity and genuine human flourishing. Worldly success may be a blessing, but it may also become a test, a temptation, or a source of spiritual blindness.
The deeper question is not simply what blessings a person receives, but what those blessings produce: gratitude and love, or pride and spiritual death.
