Steven Spielberg’s latest film, Disclosure Day, was promoted as a movie that could produce an “ontological shock” by forcing humanity to confront the possibility that we are not alone in the universe. Rather than undermining Christian faith, I argue that the film ultimately demonstrates the remarkable explanatory depth and flexibility of the Christian worldview.
Among other themes, I discuss:
• Why Christianity has already grappled with questions surrounding extraterrestrial intelligence for decades.
• How Spielberg’s portrayal of benevolent extraterrestrials unintentionally reflects qualities Christians have traditionally associated with God Himself—reason, intelligibility, love, and compassion.
• Why Christian thinkers, theologians, and exorcists have developed multiple frameworks for understanding extraordinary phenomena, ranging from biological extraterrestrials to spiritual intelligences.
• How Carl Sagan’s Contact may offer a more profound insight into the relationship between faith and reason through the common pursuit of truth.
• Why disclosure may pose a greater challenge to materialism and scientism than to Christianity.
Ultimately, Christians need not fear extraterrestrials, disclosure, or any future discovery about the cosmos. Truth has nothing to fear from truth.
