We Have Never Been Alone

Over the past few years, something remarkable has happened. A topic once confined to science fiction conventions, late-night radio shows, and grainy conspiracy videos has entered mainstream public discourse.

Governments have acknowledged the reality of unexplained aerial phenomena. Military personnel have testified before Congress. Journalists who once dismissed the subject now treat it as a legitimate area of inquiry. More recently, additional government disclosures have only intensified public fascination.

Whether one believes these phenomena represent advanced technology, natural anomalies, psychological phenomena, extraterrestrial intelligence, or something else entirely, one thing is certain: humanity remains captivated by the possibility that we are not alone.

Yet as I reflected on this growing cultural moment, I found myself returning not to modern UFO researchers but to Blaise Pascal.

Pascal observed that the vastness of the cosmos can fill us with wonder, but also with dread. He famously wrote, “The eternal silence of these infinite spaces terrifies me.”

For Pascal, our fascination with distant worlds could easily become a form of diversion, a way of avoiding the more uncomfortable questions that lie much closer to home: Why are we here? What is the purpose of life? What happens after death? Is there a God?

These are questions no amount of technological progress can eliminate.

In my latest article for Crisis Magazine, I explore the modern disclosure movement through a Christian lens. Rather than focusing on sensational claims, I examine the deeper spiritual significance of our collective fascination with extraterrestrial life and ask whether the UFO phenomenon reveals something profound about the human condition itself.

The article also considers perspectives from Catholic thinkers, scientists, theologians, and cultural observers who argue that the most important questions raised by the UFO age may not be scientific at all, but spiritual.
