In fourteen-hundred and ninety-two,
Columbus sailed the ocean blue…

or was it,

In fourteen-hundred and ninety-three,
Columbus sailed the deep blue sea.

Well, regardless of the year or even whether he actually discovered the islands of the Caribbean and not the actual continent, the fact remains that he didn’t plan ahead. If he had, the country would now be known as The United States of Columbia, or even The United States of Christophia.

Sadly (for him) another man named Amerigo Vespucci did plan ahead and when he also landed on the shores of this UNNAMED land in 1507, he named it after himself, calling it America.

Amerigo Vespucci

So now we know about North America, Central America and South America, all named after Amerigo, simply because Columbus forgot to formally name what he had discovered.

Always remember to PLAN AHEAD!
