Everyone’s Deciding What’s Chic. So Here’s My List.

Apparently, we’re all sharing what’s chic these days.

It’s kind of chic to this. It’s kind of chic to that.

Honestly? I’m kind of loving it.

So I figured I’d throw my hat in the ring.

The only difference is...my list has little to do with fashion, and a little more to do with how we choose to live.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a great trench coat, a beautiful scarf, and a perfectly cut blazer as much as the next person. But the older I get, the less impressed I am by things that simply look chic.

I’m much more interested in the people who are chic.

The ones who make life feel richer. The ones who make everyone around them feel a little more at ease. The ones who remind me that style has always been about much more than what you wear.

So, in no particular order...

There was a time when I thought changing your mind meant you lacked conviction. Now I think it means you’ve learned something. Growth has always been more attractive than certainty.

Not in a harsh way. In a freeing way. Celebrate someone else’s success. Apologize first. Laugh at yourself.

Stop assuming you’re the main character in every room.

Life gets much lighter when your ego gets a little quieter.

Not quietly competitive. Not secretly comparing.

Just...happy.

Someone else’s light doesn’t dim yours.

If anything, it makes the whole room brighter. Particularly with a stylish hat.

I don’t think curiosity, ambition, creativity, or reinvention have an expiration date.

Not because anyone expects it of you.

Because feeding people is one of the oldest love languages we have.

Some of my favorite evenings have ended around a kitchen table with pasta, too much bread, and conversations that lasted long after dessert.

Wear the vintage dress. Wear the red lipstick. Paint your nails red.

Use the beautiful plates. I’ve started to pretend ordinary Tuesdays are the special occasion.

At dinner. On a walk. During a conversation. Watching a sunset.

The people who are fully present have become surprisingly rare.

Which makes them incredibly stylish.

Wave first. Learn people’s names. Bring flowers for no reason.

Communities don’t build themselves.

Ask questions. Read books that challenge you.

Learn another language. Go to the museum.

Travel somewhere because you’re curious, not because it’s trending.

I’ve found the most interesting people are almost always the most interested.

Not because they necessarily deserve it.

Because carrying resentment is exhausting.

Life is already heavy enough.

One of my favorite things in the world is introducing people who don’t know each other.

I love watching strangers become friends over one long dinner.

I’ve collected people my whole life. Not because I need more friends.

Because every person expands the way I see the world.

Fresh flowers from the grocery store.

Morning coffee in your favorite mug.

A long walk after dinner.

Music while you’re cooking.

Opening the windows.

Watching the rain.

None of it is extraordinary.

That’s exactly the point.

I think it’s kind of chic to have opinions that can evolve.

To say, “I hadn’t thought of it that way.”

To learn.

To soften.

To grow.

To cry when you’re moved.

To be impossible to embarrass.

Life is much more fun when you stop worrying about looking cool.

Not every invitation needs a yes.

Not every argument deserves your energy.

Not every opinion requires your response.

To stay hopeful.

To stay curious.

To believe people can surprise you.

That might be the chicest thing of all.

It’s generosity.

It’s curiosity.

It’s kindness.

It’s confidence without arrogance.

It’s showing up.

It’s making people feel seen.

It’s laughing at yourself.

It’s changing your mind.

It’s continuing to dream.

Maybe chic was never about having the right handbag or getting into the right restaurant.

Maybe it was always about character.

And that you just can’t buy.

I’d love to hear what you find chic…
