Sometimes life presents us with events or challenges which are too big for the mind to solve or fix on it’s own. Has this happened in your life?

This certainly happened to me, when my Dad died in what can best be described as undesirable circumstance during the covid pandemic. There was nothing I could do, and with little in the way of available support, I navigated my way through it by finally integrating all my skills as a coach and trained healer fully into my life.

I learned to trust the wisdom of my heart, and to trust life enough to say yes to my own dreams. This led me to the life I have today, working as a wild soul coach from my beautiful off-grid narrowboat home.

The woman I interviewed for today’s story also experienced an event which was too big for her mind to “fix”. Her story is the story of someone who spent years cultivating strength, competence and self reliance, only to discover that the next chapter of life required something entirely different. Not less strength, but a different relationship with it.

She has the courage to share her dream even though it is not fulled formed - a longing to create a place where others have permission to rest, permission to soften, and permission to discover who they are when survival is no longer running the show.

This week I’m offering these questions to you for reflection or journalling:

💡 Where do I still believe I must be hard, capable or self sufficient in order to be safe?

💡 What would it mean for me to create more inner peace before trying to create change in the world around me?

Make yourself a brew, sit down for a few minutes, and enjoy reading the story of this woman’s dream. The following words are all her own, from an interview held in January 2026.

With love, Sarah xox

I have a dream that’s not fully formed. I’ve only really encountered pieces of its essence, and it’s a big one. At its heart, I dream of using the story of my life with all the hardships and the challenges I’ve undergone, to help create a space for others to be safe and where they can develop resilience.

In many ways, that could be an online non-physical space. But in the back of my mind I dream of a physical space, a place that incorporates plants and nature - things which I’m passionate about.

When I was growing up, I didn’t have a safe space, and I never really had one for most of my life.

Somehow, I managed to get through and work my way through the world, but it took a lot of really steeling myself and doing hard things.

You can do that for a while, perhaps even for a long time, but it takes a toll. I think that some steeliness is necessary; it’s a key element that we all have, but it should be something you only wield in crucial times when you really need it.

I’m only just now learning and appreciating the value of softness, and making space for that in my life.

We don’t have to be soft all the time.

A lot of people associate softness with being pushovers or doormats, and that’s not what it’s about.

It’s more about being soft with yourself, gentle with yourself, really connecting with yourself and taking the time to learn what you truly need. Softness can connect you to your heart and help you follow your heart more.

That’s what it boils down to; connecting with and following your heart, and trusting that it will lead you to places where you don’t have to use your steeliness all the time.

Your heart will help you walk a path where yes, you may have to wield steeliness occasionally, but not all the time. You may face challenges but they would only be little bumps in the road.

And along that heart-led path, you can find space for joy, and for the things that really, truly connect you to life, to communities, to a sense of play and fun.

When you don’t have to be hard all the time, life can become more easeful, and that’s when we can truly blossom.

I had a vision of a healing centre maybe seven or eight years ago, and it has stuck with me. Every once in a while, it pops up. It does change and evolve over time, but some key elements always remain.

The healing centre would be a space for community and somewhere people can retreat to; a haven and a safe space. I like the idea of having a retreat space where you can drop all your cares. To set them aside for a while, and be in a place that helps you to be calm and peaceful, so that you really can connect with yourself and connect with your heart.

I’ve had to be hard and steely for much of my life, and it was my mind that governed everything. I was very logical, and very, very smart.

I could figure out just about anything and I never doubted that. I’ve never doubted that I could figure out a way to overcome any obstacle, and I was willing to do the hard work to do it.

I used to be married and that ended unexpectedly. It nearly broke me, but it got me to a place where I was faced with the one problem my brain could not solve.

I was finally forced to not let my brain lead everything. I learned its limits. My armour, my steel, simply wasn’t working anymore, and I had to listen more to my heart. I had to simply let myself feel the emotions and a lot of pain.

But I learned that there was so much more that I could experience. That even if I opened myself up to the pain and let myself feel it, there was so much more in my heart that could lead on to better things.

Connecting to my heart enabled me to experience exponential joy in exchange for the life I had previously been living which had been led solely by my mind.

Creating this healing centre would in many ways be the true measure of success for me.

I’ve never considered myself successful, but a friend pointed out to me the other day that by all measures of success, I’ve had a successful life.

But it’s never felt like that to me. I don’t know why. Maybe because for much of it, even though I’ve been doing good things, I’ve been in survival mode.

Now that I’m listening to my heart more, I feel like I am on the path to really creating this dream. But I always feel a pressure like time is running out, like there is something I have to do, even though I don’t know what it is. So I don’t doubt that this dream will still evolve once I’ve created that healing space.

Right now it feels as though something is calling me, but I only see bits and pieces of it at any one time. Only when I’ve created this healing space will I be able to be at peace and rest.

There’s so much conflict in the larger world.

The biggest thing that’s missing in the world is inner peace and peace at large. But if we’re to see peace in the outer world, we first have to have it within.

I want to help to generate that for others simply by touching one heart at a time. Then it spools out a thread that connects to others. This dream will be part of creating more kindness and compassion in the world. And that’s so sorely needed.

I feel that this dream has finally taken root. I planted a seed and it’s taken root now that I’ve voiced this dream. It’s possible.

Something has shifted, like something is more solid.

The next step is just around the corner.

I can’t see it yet, but I trust that it’s there.
