Welcome! This letter wouldn’t be possible without YOU! Thank you for being here + enormous thanks to all who choose to support my work with a paid subscription.
Hi, friends.
Oh my goodness. Do I have a recipe for you.
First, a mini recap: we’re only five days into our summer, and already we’ve had one overnight visit to nyc, two college tours, a lazy day at home and a full summer day at the creek with pizzas and floating tubes, mini rapids and lovely, dear friends.
It’s a good start.
One of the ballet intensives Greta applied to, auditioned for and got accepted to this summer—in Budapest—canceled last minute, spinning our whole summer on it’s head, so here we are in late June, rearranging everything week by week. First the first time ever, I have zero camps booked for my kids, zero hotels and zero complex itineraries to Italy or Croatia which have been the hallmark of our summers past. What we do have—two sets of plane tickets: one to see my parents in early July, and one batch to visit Andras’ parents in Hungary in August, per tradition.
I’m not trying to win any awards this summer. That’s my new mantra. If I can keep my kids (relatively) off screens, in nature and each humming along on a summer project they feel passionately about (for Mátyàs: nursing his sourdough starter that he named Jerry, which he plans to turn into a cottage bread business, for Greta: babysitting, studying for the SAT and taking her first Neuroscience course), I’ll be satisfied. Bonus if we can make it to the drive in movie with our besties, watch the fireworks on the Fourth of July and manage to have a yummy snacking cake on the counter each week to nibble on between bike rides and summer play dates.
Enter: this ridiculously good chocolate snacking loaf pictured above. I’ve already waxed on and on about how much I love chocolate in past letters. I’ll take chocolate ice cream, a dark-chocolate-covered graham cracker, dark chocolate pudding, mouse or just plain bittersweet chocolate in a small square any day of the week (around 2 PM, ideally!), but if there’s one thing I can’t resist, it’s the texture of a dense cake, with the satisfying bittersweet chocolate notes all the way through. A cake to make all summer long to bring to the pool, picnics, hikes, campouts and more. This is it.
If you liked my Chocolate-Tahini Power Cups, this is the same dreamy flavor profile, in dense yet meltingly tender cake form. Below is the recipe, for paid subscribers (there’s a huge subscription sale on for two more days—if you want to join the club).
I hope you love it. I’ll be baking this one for years to come.
xx
Sarah
