Saludos from Mallorca: Greatness Is Built Point by Point.

Saludos from Mallorca! I’m here with my family on summer vacation. We’ve been exploring some of Mallorca’s most beautiful towns, and honestly, I’ve been meaning to write about them but as tennis fans, we planned an entire morning to visit the Rafa Nadal Academy and Museum in Manacor and I left super inspired.

I have to admit; I thought I was simply visiting a tennis academy and the museum of one of the greatest athletes of all time. But as soon as I left, I spent the rest of the afternoon thinking about how much of it applied to entrepreneurship.

It’s easy to look at Rafa and see 22 Grand Slams, Olympic medals, and one of the greatest careers in sports histor but walking through the museum, you’re reminded that none of those achievements happened overnight.

His career wasn’t built trophy by trophy. It was built point by point, practice by practice, win by win and, of course, loss by loss.

As founders, we’re often obsessed with the big milestones: the funding round, the product launch, the press feature, the viral post, the first million in revenue. And yes, those milestones are the carrot that keeps us going. But it’s worth reminding ourselves that careers and companies aren’t built in those moments alone. They’re built in the thousands of ordinary days that nobody applauds.

What struck me most about the museum wasn’t the trophies. It was the values, the discipline, the consistency, the humility, the respect and the obsession with getting a little better every single day. Those are qualities every founder talks about, but very few sustain for decades.

And then there was one room that completely took me by surprise: “The Big Three”. An entire space dedicated not only to Rafa, but also to Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. At first, it felt unexpected. Why would one of the greatest athletes of all time dedicate so much space to his biggest rivals?

Then it clicked.

Without Federer and Djokovic, there is no Rafa as we know him today. They pushed each other to levels they might never have reached alone. It reminded me that competition doesn’t diminish greatness. It sharpens it.

As founders, we spend so much time worrying about our competitors. Maybe we should spend more time appreciating them. Walking through that room, I made a mental note: The best competitors don’t just challenge us. They force us to become better versions of ourselves.

Walking out of the complex, I kept thinking that Rafa’s greatest legacy may not be his trophies but the systems, values, and mindset he’s leaving behind.

That’s what great founders do, too. They don’t just build successful companies, they build institutions that outlive them.
