How often should one reproof their Barbour waxed items? The conventional wisdom is every year. Surprisingly, a new Barbour may sometimes need it after just a few months. Many people prefer to send their jackets back to the Barbour repair facility in Milford, New Hampshire where they can get a professional job at a very reasonable price. And others do it themselves, although that precludes the…
Launching my first product - Socratic Cards. Photo by Muffy Aldrich Introducing Socratic Cards. As I say on our site: Socratic Cards are deep, and fun, questions that spark meaningful conversations. For evenings with friends, dorm room late nights, jump-starting meetings, or long sails. Or saving a dinner party. Socratic questions are intellectual superfoods. They build essential leadership and…
A reader question: Is there a recipe book you all would recommend for outdoor entertaining, grilling Nantucket style /Preppy/Yacht Club/Regattas? Several to choose from would be ideal. Please and thank you to all.
A Reader question: Good morning, my memory lane guru and tour guide. One of my favorite posts remains your 2017 introduction to the "Life Cycle of Preppy Companies." ("Many peddle aspirational vulgarity." Brilliant.) I was wondering if you plan a 'ten years on' update - I think it would be well received! All the best from this New Englander in his Mid-Atlantic exile, So, with the goal of filling…

A question from a reader: Hi Muffy, May I ask a question which I hope is pertinent to the blog. Do people, other than me, use fountain pens? My father gave me my first fountain pen when I was eleven years old and I've used one ever since. I always carry one to appointments in case I need to sign my name and at home I use one exclusively as I did when I was working prior to retirement. Obviously…
I received a note from a reader asking: What are the best trousers for a business or business casual workplace?
From a Reader: I have a question for this intelligent community. When the temperature reaches 90++++ what is your favorite outfit? I prefer white and creme linen and cotton with flip flops and a straw hat. I'm wondering if both males and females have other useful suggestions. Hats and foot gear suggestions appreciated! Love the warmth but enjoy being comfortable

I had scanned in some pages from a 1994 L.L. Bean catalog that was hidden in our bookcase a handful of years back. And as I came across these scans today, I thought it might be interesting to see if any of the items from 32 years ago were still as good today. I grabbed some links of the same, or similar, items for comparison. Women's Premium Double L Polo, Short-Sleeve Relaxed Fit Premium Double L…
Photos by Muffy Aldrich Steele Canvas launched this summer their new Icon collection, celebrating our country’s 250th anniversary, and did it brilliantly. It is made of an especially good shade of Navy, and of the tough all cotton canvas for which they are known. I honestly cannot imagine a tougher canvas duffle bag, with a big rugged zipper, a duffle that will indeed last decades. All made in…

A reader question: Dear Muffy, On the assumption that I'm not the only one of your readers that enjoys a gin & tonic, what is their favourite "slice" or for that matter "wedge". I personally prefer lime, but I have a dear friend who likes orange, which is not something I've seen anyone else do. If it's not lime, it's usually lemon. Any thoughts? Kind regards

Photo by Muffy Aldrich I have received several inquiries about favorite/best annuals for containers, so I thought I would put it out for the community. While I always have pink or white Geraniums in various pots scattered about, in the photo above is a Scaevola in pink which is incredibly hardy and long lasting, though I also have it in the blue in other planters. Supertunia, which is a new one…
A reader question: Dear Editor, What is the thought on Rolex watches? I have never been interested in one, but my wife has proposed purchasing one for a big milestone. I think many models are gaudy and the culture around the brand has become a little over the top. However, the Explorer I is a beautiful watch and seems the be the most simple, iconic and affordable choice.
