Jen (Kim) Serena · Safe For Work (SFW)

As I’ve previously written, I’m in the process of divesting from Twitter, given its increasingly uncertain future. But I’ve spent years into investing and building community there – and had a lot of fun too, so I’m determined to capture these for posterity.

At its peak, Tech Twitter was chock-full of drama. Usually I was content munching on popcorn from the sidelines, but at times, felt compelled to call out shenanigans, in hopes of raising the bar for our industry. Here is a collection of some of my favorite spicy moments 🌶️ calling out some truly stupid ideas.

Each of the below could be expanded into a whole separate post, so if you're interested in learning more, let me know!

Disclaimer: Pulling out my feistiest posts (from thousands!) might make me look like an asshole but I promise I am perfectly pleasant person 😇

I eat clueless HR tech founders for breakfast link
Once you realize this, you can't unsee it! It's everywhere! link
Shortly after this thread, a journalist from The Economist reached out and I provided comments for this piece: https://economist.com/united-states/2021/05/20/why-tech-firms-are-trying-to-run-away-from-politics-and-failing
The oppressive regime of salads must end!! 🥗 link

Live-tweeting through a conference!

Bad DEI advice at a conference, continued:

How might we hold conference organizers accountable, and encourage them to have a higher bar for the quality of speakers? 🤔

More shade:

A case of bad HR tech irl!

Much like digital literacy... we must develop HRTech literacy!

Don't place too much weight into industry "awards":

In hindsight, all those "How to break into tech" influencers were a sign of the impending layoffs...
This has been expanded into a whole post: https://safeforwork.substack.com/p/008-how-hr-tech-became-the-preferred
all this VC-sponsored nonsense was also a harbinger of times to come
And they still haven't left, I fear
#NotAllCoaches ofc! The good ones are very good. It can just be hard to tell.
#NotAllEMs
"Thats a real nice culture you've got there.... shame if something were to... happen to it..."
then I'd have to explain that I was in recruiting lol! The humiliation.
the inevitable passage of time is marked by performance reviews
i hope my reply guys are well!
The techbros' responses to Roe v. Wade being overturned in 2022 was WILD. Even if well-intended, so transparent and ultimately not at all helpful...
Do they want to solve problems or do they want to LOOK like they're solving problems?
I wish this wasn't true!
I am pleased to report vast improvement in this area! Probably because of how picky we are at Workflow in who we work with as clients.
he found the tweet and DM'd me afterwards

Postscript

Like many, I’ve been following the conflict in Gaza. Since October 7, at least 32,975 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli attacks. While the world’s politicians argue whether the conflict meets the legal definitions of genocide, the reality is that ’unprecedented’ levels of famine is upon Gaza and “1.1 million people, more than half of Gaza's entire population, are experiencing catastrophic food insecurity.”

As schoolkids, we’d been taught to reflect on past atrocities and what we would have done if history was happening to us. How would we survive? Would we speak up and risk our own privileges? How much does the voice of an individual matter? These questions, while there are no simple answers, have prepared us for this moment, as history is happening now.

Join me in calling for a permanent ceasefire and end to the complicity of the United States. Raise your voice with elected officials, support humanitarian actions, and continue to raise awareness (more here).
