Preserving the integrity of your work in the wellness space

Many of you have heard me diss the wellness/ spiritual space over the years even though I’ve played a part in it, by using my voice in various public outlets.

A few years back, at the apex of my media blitz, I was on a track. I felt it. A timeline. The markets got bigger. The opportunities widened and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I knew I could play in that world, and my inner work would hold me up. The integrity I had around what I spoke on would keep me in good stead. And it did.

Until it began to feel hollow.

I started to not look forward to the TV appearances - more and more feeling like I was part of a “fast-food self-help” culture:

The quick soundbites.

The lists rattling off the benefits of meditation or breathwork.

The self-help/ self-love to do’s.

The surface jargon.

There is absolutely a place for it, but it wasn’t feeling juicy to me, or where I wanted to be on the frontlines of helping others.

I knew to step back.

It was odd to let go of what was building, especially because being of service felt like the very thing I was most meant to do in this time…and amplifying my message in those spaces seemed like the very best way to do it.

One of the things that stood out for me the most was an ongoing wave of “ICK” with what I saw around me:

The spiritual influencers, mega coaches, the pushy female empowerment mentors, the self-development media darlings … Oh my God, they are doing so much harm. Hijacking phrases, words, and sacred processes, ultimately leading people away from themselves. An echo chamber of insanity and false prophets.

I wanted to put as much distance as I could from that mêle until the “ICK” passed.

So, I retired of sorts from that arm of ‘public’ service, and returned to what I loved and how it all began, by working quietly with clients 1:1, without marketing or fanfare.

And that has felt really nourishing and connected. I really love it, and my clients.

It’s a tough balance to strike out there for healers. Because sometimes we need to step back for our own reasons - pushing too hard or not being in integrity with what we are saying and doing - and sometimes you can’t just walk away because it’s how you provide for self and others.

Wellness is a tricky space that way, as we’re mixing commercialism + healing others.

Being honest with yourself and dialing back at times instead of pressing on, so that you preserve the integrity of your work, and the connection to that loving energy that heals through you.

All important things to feel into while walking this path.
