Rethink Priorities · RP Research Digest

Rethink Priorities is growing: we are hiring new talent in leadership and cutting-edge areas of research.

The roles we’re hiring for will help us shape our strategic communications and our stakeholder engagement in the age of AI and in new philanthropic landscapes (Head of Communications and Development), contribute to the emerging field of digital minds research by exploring the market for and cognitive features of large language models (Economics Focus and Technical Focus research roles on the AI Cognition Initiative team) and drive cross-cause prioritization research questions forward (Researcher on the Worldview Investigations Team).

This is also an opportunity to join a team of kind, ambitious, and talented researchers and implementers who have helped us move millions of philanthropic dollars towards high-impact interventions, pioneer foundational research in neglected cause areas, and provide early operational support for projects such as Epoch AI and Apollo Research.

Learn more below! We hope you’ll consider applying.

Application deadline: June 7, 2026 | Compensation: $135,000–$170,000/year | Full-time or Part-time (32 hours/ week minimum)

The philanthropic landscape and effective altruism are growing. AI is changing the way people produce, find, and appreciate content. We are seeking a senior leader with strong strategic foresight to help RP navigate these structural changes in our environment while managing competing priorities across our Communications and Development departments as the organization grows.

This is a new senior leadership role with organizational authority, which can leverage its creation to drive impact. The right candidate will have a track record in Communications and/or Development, as well as demonstrated project and people management capabilities.

Application deadline: June 12, 2026 | Compensation: $75,900–$125,400/year | Full-time or Part-time

The AI Cognition Initiative (AICI, a project of Rethink Priorities) investigates AI systems as both moral agents and moral patients, questions that matter for how we develop, regulate, and relate to advanced AI. In January 2026, they released the first systematic, probabilistic benchmark of AI consciousness: the Digital Consciousness model.

This role brings an economics lens to the AICI’s novel research agenda on digital minds. Projects in the first year of work will include market projections on the incorporation of social engagement features into AI interfaces, as well as research on AI companion adoption and market structure.

Candidates comfortable conducting economics or related quantitative projects with limited supervision and drawn to foundational questions about AI are encouraged to apply.

This technical role at the AICI (see above for more details) is for researchers who can both design and conduct empirical experiments on the cognitive mechanisms of large language models and who are excited by the stakes of this cutting-edge work.

Candidates with hands-on experience working with open-source models and cloud infrastructure, a solid understanding of transformer architectures, and familiarity with modern interpretability techniques would be well-suited for this role.

RP’s Worldview Investigations Team (WIT) works on foundational moral and empirical questions underlying (cross-)cause prioritization. Notably, they have steered the Moral Weight Project and, more recently, our Cross-Cause Prioritization Model, which helps compare giving opportunities across areas from a cause-neutral standpoint and which underlies RP’s new Cross-Cause Fund.

This new role is for a cause prioritization researcher who will tackle research questions arising from the influx of new funding and funders in the EA space, producing decision-relevant guidance for grantmakers and philanthropists.

We expect the successful candidate to have a substantial background in philosophy and quantitative reasoning and modeling, as well as familiarity with the general features of the cause prioritization landscape.

Rethink Priorities is a think-and-do tank. Our research aims to empower organizations and philanthropists with the key data to do the most good with their resources. Our Special Projects team has supported dozens of promising projects to accelerate their growth, mostly in the AI safety space.

Over our eight years of operation, we have consistently sought high-impact gaps to fill. In doing so, we have uncovered new frontier cause areas, stewarded cross-cause prioritization research, and launched multiple new initiatives, such as, recently, the AI Cognition Initiative and the Cross-Cause Fund.

By joining our team, you would contribute to a dynamic, relentlessly impact-seeking effort to do the most good for humans and non-human animals.

In addition, we care deeply about our employees’ welfare. See more below.

We believe the day-to-day experience of our team members matters. A few things that make RP an unusually good place to work:

  • Flexible, fully remote work. Our team is based across 15 countries. We want you to work when and where you’re most productive.

  • Work-life balance. We don’t cap vacation or personal leave. Employees take a minimum of 30 days annually.

  • Competitive health benefits. Comprehensive coverage through insurance, with details varying by country.

  • Parental leave. Up to 6–9 months of combined paid and unpaid parental leave, available in the two years following a child’s birth or adoption.

  • Equipment and AI tools funding. We offer a stipend to cover what you need to do your best work.

  • Transparent compensation. Salaries are set through a clear, consistent formula based on title level and experience.

  • Open and collaborative workplace. In addition to the work, ideas are taken seriously, feedback is expected to flow in both directions, and RP’s culture is one that our team members consistently describe as friendly, collaborative, and low on bureaucracy.

If any of these roles sound like a good fit, we’d genuinely love to hear from you. Applications are competitive, but the best candidates sometimes don’t think of themselves as obvious fits. If you’re thoughtful, curious, and motivated by doing work that matters, we would like to see your application.

If none of these roles are right for you, please consider forwarding this post to someone who might be interested. People who could thrive in these positions won’t necessarily see our job ad, but they might be in your network!
