And at that moment, looking at that humble slip of paper, I realized we were witnessing something rare:
A community earning. A community choosing ownership. A community proving the model works.

You never expect the moment transformation announces itself. For us at Roots Africa, it was the day a $17 repayment arrived from a remote Ugandan community. Not because of the amount, but because of what it proved. That a young changemaker had built something real. That a rural agribusiness had earned revenue. That a community refused to be anyone’s beneficiary, they chose to be partners.
For decades, billions have flowed into Africa through grants, aid trucks, and donations. Some helped. But most didn’t answer the question that matters most.
Are communities stronger when the money stops?
Too often, the answer was no.
It wasn’t because African farmers lacked ambition or intelligence.
It was because the global system treated them as beneficiaries instead of partners.
Roots Africa was built to change that.
Not through charity.
Not through dependency.
But through training, ownership, accountability, and real agribusiness growth.
We asked ourselves a simple question:
What would rural transformation look like if communities led it, and we simply equipped them?

We decided to try something bold in 2025.
Instead of giving grants to changemakers ventures, we provided small seed loans.
We didn’t know what would happen.
Would repayment come?
Would ventures survive?
Would farmers/changemakers trust the model?
Then the repayments started.
Slowly at first.
Then steadily.
And that first $17 hit differently.
It told us:
The ventures are real.
The revenue is real.
The commitment is real.
The impact is real.
Today, five changemaker ventures have already begun paying back their loans.
They’re training farmers, increasing yields, storing harvests properly, growing food, and reinvesting profits back into their communities.

Back a Community Ready to Grow
A few years ago, many farmers in our partner communities earned less than $24 per month. That was simply the reality.
Today, we are seeing a very different picture.
Pig farming in Kihondo used to take 12 months.
Income was slow and unpredictable.
Lucy, a trained changemaker, worked with farmers to improve feeding, housing, and disease control.
The result:
The pig cycle dropped to 6 months. Income doubled. Confidence soared.
This is a transformation you can measure.
Empower Small Farming Communities
In communities like Awich Village, Neingben, and Tonglewein, farmers were losing up to 40 percent of their harvests due to pests and storage issues.
After training, storage redesign, and pest-control education:
Losses dropped dramatically.
Forty percent saved is forty percent earned.
That is the kind of change that keeps a family stable.
Back a Farmer Level Up This Season
Roots Africa is now active in:
18 communities
Across Uganda and Liberia
With over 14,650 farmers trained
