Besides being a product designer and builder, I’m also a trained visual artist and musician. Usually those two worlds stay separate. But maybe they don’t have always to.
I’ve always been curious about generative music and visuals, and recently started experimenting with Claude Code to help me create beauty for the sake of beauty.
Something meditative or inspiring or hypnotizing or even surprising.
Design is often about control, finesse, perfection.
Art, and creativity in general, is also sometimes about trying to let go of control.
Enter Aura, a short, interactive audiovisual experiment.
Floating particles behave differently depending on the vibe you choose.
In “Estelle”, an almost Bauhaus flatness kicks off with a single ball. Others join and congregate. As they collide, they form visible connections that persist leaving intricate structures that represent their history together. Eventually, some pass, others come in.
“Firefly” (a reference to my earliest childhood memory) finds lightning bugs that prefer to move in pairs, leaving a trail of light as they go, blinking in that characteristic way we used to get so excited about as kids. When they congregate in groups, they leave plumes of color that over time create an abstract watercolor.
Interactivity is a key aspect that ensure no two experiences are ever the same. You can pick up an object and others follow curiously. I also started experimenting with adding user-controlled beats and synths, letting users turn these abstract sounds in a head-nodding ambient soundscape while they watch the particles slowly interact and evolve.
