Rogue Games · The Substack for Rogue Games

The time has come.

Ok, I have been writing about it for a while. Hell, I have been working on this for close to two years. I avoided, ignored it, and put it off. I only got here, to this moment, because of a friend. What is this moment? Do I even need to say it?

Yeah, I do.

The Colonial Gothic: Revolution Edition Kickstarter is now live!

It just so happens to start on July 4th. The 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. One of those serendipitous moments that only comes around once in a lifetime.

Nearly twenty years ago, Rogue Games was born, and it was born for Colonial Gothic. From 2007 to the present, the small first edition of the game has seen refinement and tweaks and has continued to be in print. The weird idea I had, the desire to create something I could not find. I wondered if anyone would ever be willing to try it.

You proved me wrong. You kept this game alive through every edition, every supplement, every dark year when I was not sure what came next. This campaign is for you as much as it is for the new players we are about to bring into this world.

It has brought me, no, us, to this point.

The Colonial Gothic: Revolution Edition is not a replacement. It is not a symbol of surrender. It is an invitation for those who have known of the game, enjoyed the background and source material, but have been turned off by the 12-sided die that fuels the 12° system.

Rebuilt from the ground up, the Colonial Gothic: Revolution Edition is built on the 20-sided die, inspired by the rules system that powers the world’s most popular tabletop game. The system, dubbed 20°. Yes, I know, a new system using the degree symbol. I am a sucker for symmetry.

This is not a clone of other rules. This is a game that takes everything Colonial Gothic is known for and opens the door for those who want the rules they are familiar and comfortable with but want to experience a new setting. A world similar to ours but different. Learn the secret history that no one teaches us in school.

And to answer the question: no, the original game, the one built upon the 12° system, is not dead. The Colonial Gothic: Revolution Edition sits next to Colonial Gothic, and both are doors into a game now approaching its 20th anniversary.

  • The world does not split.

  • The history does not change.

  • The shadows do not move.

  • All books work together. All releases are designed for both.

The story hidden in the shadows is still the same. The only thing different is which rules you want to use: the 12° system or the 20° system.

So, the time is here. Look up to the sexton of Boston’s Old North Church: the lanterns are lit.

The time is now.

The Colonial Gothic: Revolution Edition Kickstarter is here!
