There are lots of reasons to visit a restaurant, and one is that it’s just plain fun, as we demonstrated recently. Here are eight more just as much fun — and the food is great, too.
It has only been in the last few years that Mexico-City style bars and gastropubs have begun appearing in the city, most especially in Queens. These places strive to be neighborhood destinations that anchor Mexican-America communities, and though welcoming to outsiders, are not really striving to attract them. The drinks of choice are mezcal and tequila based, but beer, especially in michelada form, is the most popular beverage.
Michelada House II (the only one currently in business, as far as I know) is one such gastropub. It is clubby, almost empty in the afternoons and mobbed many evenings. The snacks are the lure, including many semi-humorous things (a quesadilla shaped like a giant sword and a torta made with chilaquiles), others are more normal drinking snacks (ceviches, grasshopper tacos, and fried seafood). Anway, it’s a rollicking place to be with a fulsome menu of edibles. Most dishes $6 to $40. 88-19 Roosevelt Ave, Jackson Heights
