I am about halfway through PVWW’s 10-month poetry and hybrid writing manuscript program with Amie Whittemore. Last month Amie assigned a “one-pager” project: each student read and researched a book that related to their vision or goals for their manuscript, then we each made a single page or slide to add to the “one-pager parade” powerpoint presentation. The criteria for the slide had loose parameters, with freedom be as formal or creative in our approach as we felt inspired to be. I selected The Diary of Frida Kahlo: An Intimate Self-Portrait, and created this slide. To the left is a page from my sketch journal, which includes a timeline of Frida’s life and key moments in her disability narrative, as well as an original collage made with my own drawings and pieces of the famous “Two Fridas” by Kahlo. The other images shown in the slide are photos of pages I referenced in my drawing for the one-pager or used as guides for my creative choices. Not pictured here but included in this post: a loosely cento-style poem crafted with a Diego Rivera quote and lines from the book’s introduction, written by Carlos Fuentes. Also included in this post, my own journal intime: a second one-pager I created in my sketch journal, featuring original poems, a self-portrait, and personal reflections from my own diary. Finally, I conclude with quotes from the text’s essay and commentaries written by Sarah M. Lowe.
