Cool and earthy, the kind of teacher who seems to naturally set her students at ease, Amie initiated us into the first class of our 10-month manuscript program with a writing exercise that could have been taken from a page in a grimoire. Through somatic divination, we answered the call to enter the mindset of bewilderment and to fascinate ourselves out of creative blocks.
The first task was to identify the blocks.
My Creative Block
People with disabilities are rendered feral by a state obsessed with our collective soulless domestication. We are not caged so much as locked out, and we are punished as if culpable for our ostracization from a culture we are forced to dedicate our lives to gaining access to and thriving within. Luck of circumstance is rewarded as merit, while ill health and pauperism are moralized. Such societal ills are first manufactured by the ruling parasitic class, and then weaponized against those with the least access to wealth and power.
How do we win a rigged race? We don’t. The system is working as intended.1
