An online friend wrote a bit about reading Master and Commander — the first book in the 20-volume Aubrey-Maturin series of seafaring novels. I posted a comment recommending the H.M.S. Surprise website, host of a great discussion list.
Anyone with an interest in things nautical and especially the age of sail — iron men and wooden ships and all — might be of interest. People opn bopard the list (lissuns, they call themselves, are unfailingly erudite, communicative, and civil.
Anyone who dips a toe into the Aubrey-Maturin canon (there are 20 volumes) and finds the water comfortable, will want to know about HMSSurprise.org . The site has lots of seafaring links and resources. It is the home base for a (Brilliant!) e-mail discussion list gunroom@hmasurprise.org . The list is responsive and populated by folk who know everything worth knowing about O’Brian, the canon, and cannon. This online community has been at sea for three decades; sharing information and opinions about the O’Brian books as they were published, and now providing a safe harbor for interesting, sometimes erudite, discussions about darn near everything.
