Hello you’ve reached Time & Temperature.
Welcome to what might be a new series here on T&T, Back Lounge Bootlegs.
I woke up on Day 2 of this West Coast Old 97’s tour feeling a little down and out. I decided to get ahead of it by playing music. That’s always been my salve and salvation. The problem is if I write a new song two weeks before we finish work on the 97’s album it becomes a problem of WHY ISN’T THIS AWESOME SONG ON THE ALBUM?!? I know that’s stupid but, as we say in the Miller household, “it’s what it’s.”
So I tackled a couple of songs that have been spinning on my mental turntable recently. I had so much fun playing and singing them that I decided to share one of them with y’all over here on the ‘stack.
Jon Brion’s “Ruin My Day” appears on his criminally overlooked Meaningless album. In the late 90’s and early aughts, I saw Jon perform this song at (the old) Largo, I don’t know, like a million times? It’s in my soul, my DNA. Like all the songs on Meaningless “Ruin My Day” is a perfect little package of music, lyrics, attitude, production and narrative voice. Jon is pretty, pretty good.
I enjoy this process and might continue it. Who knows? For this first one I’ll forego the paywall, but moving forward I imagine the Back Lounge Bootlegs series will be a perk for the fancypantses among you. Enjoy!
And remember, music is the cure for sadness.
yrs,
Rhett
