We consistently overestimate what we can accomplish in a day and underestimate what we can achieve in a year. It’s the small efforts that compound daily, even though you feel nothing in the moment.
A natural bodybuilder doesn’t get fit in a week or even a year. I looked it up, and it can take five, ten, or even fifteen years of disciplined training to reach their maximum size. It’s unreal to think they are doing this, just adding grams of muscle at a time.
I think of this often when running or working out, usually right in the middle, when I’m huffing and puffing, and it looks like anything but progress. But I’m 50 now, and I’m much healthier than I was at 35. I look back on my journey and remember when a block or two wore me out. Now I run marathons, but the marathon distance was built block by block over the years.
When I think about this, I can’t help but apply it to other parts of my life because it isn’t just a gym thing. We can gain grams of growth in character, competencies, and obedience, added daily for a decade. Slowly growing into the husband, father, leader, and coworker I want to look at in the mirror and be proud of.
Grams at a time. Blocks at a time. That’s the mindset I want to hold onto.
