They came up north in search of gold
To solve financial woes
And staked their claims along the creek
Hundreds of sourdoughs
In winter it gets awfully cold
40 below the wind blows
And if you are not careful
Frostbite gets your toes
Some got rich, most did not
Mining has highs and lows
A bit of dust soon gambled away
All they had left was their clothes
We’ll name this place after a bird
Who flies high o’er the snows
Neighbors took Eagle for their name
We’ll try one this place knows
Let’s name the town Ptarmigan
Or so the story goes
It was a word they could not spell
So Chicken is what they chose
