The Arctic Ultimatum:

If you needed a reminder that geography is destiny, the first two weeks of 2026 have provided a bizarre masterclass. For those of us tracking the resilience of island nations against the tides of great power competition, the “Greenland Situation” has suddenly become real.

Following the U.S. military operation in Venezuela earlier this month, the eyes of Washington have pivoted north. The question on everyone’s mind in Nuuk is no longer if the U.S. wants to tighten its grip, but how.

I thought I’d give you my take on the crisis.

The shift from diplomatic pressure to actual threat happened in a heartbeat. Just days after the U.S. raid in Caracas captured Nicolás Maduro, Katie Miller, former Trump administration official and wife of senior advisor Stephen Miller, posted a map of Greenland on X (formerly Twitter). The island was filled with the Stars and Stripes. The caption was a single word: “SOON.”

This wasn’t a rogue tweet; it was a trial balloon from the heart of the MAGA media ecosystem. It signalled to Copenhagen and Nuuk that the “Venezuela Precedent” applies to the Arctic: sovereignty seems to be secondary to U.S. security interests. As reported in the press, the administration is willing to do this “the hard way” if necessary. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded by calling the rhetoric “absurd” and demanding the U.S. “stop the threats” against a NATO ally.

Why now? Because the U.S. defence industrial base is currently staring down a barrel.

In late 2025, China enacted a strict ban on the export of processed Rare Earth Elements (REEs) to the U.S., specifically targeting materials like gallium, germanium, and antimony, essential for military applications ranging from infrared missiles to night-vision technology. The U.S. F-35 program and Virginia-class submarines rely on these minerals. The U.S. doesn’t just want Greenland’s deposits; they effectively need them to bypass the Chinese chokehold.

This has turned Greenland’s geology into a battlefield:

● The Tanbreez Project: The U.S. Export-Import Bank (EXIM) has issued a Letter of Interest for a $120 million loan to this project, which sits on a massive deposit of heavy rare earths in southern Greenland. Unlike the controversial Kvanefjeld project, which is stalled due to uranium bans and partial ownership by the Chinese firm Shenghe Resources, Tanbreez is viewed by Washington as the “clean” ticket to resource independence.

While the media laughs at the branding, the legislation is operationally serious. Introduced on January 13, 2026, by Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN), H.R. 361 is titled the “Make Greenland Great Again Act.”

The bill explicitly authorizes the President to negotiate the acquisition of Greenland. It is supported by a growing faction of the Freedom Caucus, with Rep. Ogles stating, “American economic and security interests will no longer take a backseat.”

Despite all the rhetoric and talk of annexation, or even war, the real play would likely be an offer from the US of a “Compact of Free Association” (COFA).However, there are a lot of hoops to be jumped through before that can happen.

● The Model: Think Palau or the Marshall Islands. The U.S. handles defence and provides a massive financial block grant; the island gets “sovereignty” but grants the U.S. exclusive military access.

● The Offer: Leaks suggest the Trump administration is considering direct payments to Greenlanders, figures ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 per person have been floated, to bypass the Danish government and buy public support for a move away from Copenhagen.

This is where the “Island Resilience” theme gets complicated. We might assume islanders would be united against imperial encroachment, but the reality in Greenland is fractured.

● The Resistance: The current government, led by the Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) party, has slammed the door. Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen’s response to the U.S. pressure was blunt: “No more fantasies about annexation.”

● The Wedge: However, Pele Broberg of the opposition Naleraq party sees an opening. Naleraq, which surged in the 2025 elections to capture nearly 25% of the vote, has publicly encouraged direct talks with Washington. Broberg said: ”We encourage our current (Greenlandic) government actually to have a dialogue with the US government without Denmark. Because Denmark is antagonizing both Greenland and the US with their mediation.” Naleraq advocates a rapid movement to independence and a free association with the US.

As we tread warily into 2026, watch the Tanbreez mine. If US construction crews arrive, the economic annexation has begun. And keep an eye on the Danish Block Grant; if the US offers to match or exceed that $600M/year subsidy directly to Nuuk, the political calculus for every Greenlander could change overnight.

There is a lesson here for island nations globally: When you sit on critical resources during a great power conflict, “sovereignty” becomes a negotiation, not a given.

Whatever happens, it’s going to be interesting to watch. Let’s hope Greenlanders are allowed to take part in the discussion. Who knows, perhaps in the long-run they may even benefit. However, in the short-term things are going to get hot in the cold land to the north. That’s what I think. What about you?
