Singer-songwriter and poet Amy Speace & screenwriter and novelist Luke Goebel discuss their new books and dive into a conversation of creativity, recovery, music, literature, and artistic purpose.
Amy Speace reflects on the relationship between songwriting and poetry, describing them as “the same religion, different sect.” while Luke Goebel explores the inspirations behind his novel Kill Dick. He discusses writing about power, wealth disparity, addiction, and the systems that shape contemporary American life.
Luke Goebel is an American novelist, screenwriter, producer, and publisher. He is the author of Fourteen Stories, None of Them Are Yours, winner of the Ronald Sukenick Innovative Fiction Prize, and the novel Kill Dick. He co-wrote the films Causeway and Eileen, starring Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway; for Causeway, Brian Tyree Henry received an Academy Award nomination. Goebel is co-owner and president of Tyrant Books and lives in Los Angeles.
The Cardinals is Amy Speace’s debut collection. She is an award-winning Americana folk singer and songwriter discovered by Judy Collins. Her songs have been recorded by Ms. Collins and many others and she has won International Song of the Year from the Americana Music Association (UK). Her writing has been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, Working Mother, and Salon.com. She received her MFA from Spalding University and teaches English at Cumberland University. She resides in Nashville, Tennessee, with her son, Huckleberry, and her dog, Dusty Springfield.
