Can anyone suggest a publishing platform for me?

For the past couple of years, my wife and I have had a killer mortgage, and I was trying to supplement my income with freelance writing. I wouldn't call it a total failure, there were some successes along the way that I am proud of. But as a reliable income generator, it just wasn't the way to go.

I wrote mainly for a platform that published quick little pop-culture pieces. I wrote about Star Trek and classic rock, because that's what I could churn out lots of quick articles about. And another publication that just did random general knowledge, that one was fun. But the most frustrating part was that doing something for money tends to suck the fun out of it.

Now, things have changed, I am financially stable for the first time in my life. No mortgage. At first I took a breather from writing, but now I realise that I can write for the pleasure and the passion of it.

So, I am hunting for a platform that will publish me. I do want to be paid, but I honestly do not mind if it's not much. A token amount so that I can keep calling myself a professional writer, and so that I don't feel like they'd just publish anyone (I'm a creative, my ego needs to be catered to). Something with not too much of an obligation, because I still need my day job.

Something preferably that publishes a wide variety of content, so that I'm not writing about the same topic over and over again.

And preferably somewhere established, where my work will be seen simply by dint of it being published there. If they're expecting me to bring the eyeballs, I can't do that. I quit social media for reasons I won't bore you with, so even as a semi-successful freelance writer, I never gained a following.

And somewhere that can see past my history. I have written so much about a sixty-year old TV show, one might get the impression it's all I can write about. And while I do have a lot of published pieces that aren't about Star Trek, if you look at it in terms of numbers, it looks like that's the comfort zone I can barely break out of. All I need is an open mind.

I know it sounds like I'm asking for a lot. Maybe too much. But I have hope because Listverse exists. Listverse ticks all the above boxes, and I have been published there quite a few times. It would be perfect if they weren't so prescriptive about the formats they publish (sometimes you don't want to do a listicle, sometimes you'd rather do a deep dive). But of course, Googling "sites like Listverse," I found way more listicle sites than I had imagined would exist.

I am very well-versed in pop-culture, but politics is somewhere I'd love to try and make a dent. I am politically active, and have a lot to say. So I'd love to write for somewhere that publishes opinion and think pieces.

Suggestions? Tips?
