Is there a reason I have to unmount USB to install a windows boot onto it?

Mostly just out of curiosity, only just searched what mounting/unmounting even means in ubuntu like three seconds ago. I'm assuming if i tried to put a windows iso boot onto a usb that was mounted it would probably just try to autoinstall and that's why the computer wont lemme do that? (or maybe it will? i just saw on a guide that you need to unmount the usb before installing an iso)
