spring has SPRUNG (manifesting)! This April edition of muse-ings is filled with lots of springy dreams. Enjoy our curated list of fun craft classifieds, lots of random reccs, and some sweet notes on letter writing. It was a very inspiring newsletter to write, and i believe it will offer some creative inspo in return <3

See you soon, I hope!

something to begin: Planting <3 Spring is upon us, and the time to plant is HERE. Every year my roommate and I say, we should plant a garden and every year we wait too long and decide it is no longer possible… but this year I am reminding you (and me!) that now is the time to begin! Explore this short gardening guide from an old edition of muse-ing & dig into more at home gardening tips here.

P.S. I recently learned from a real-life-gardener that burlap coffee sacks can make a great home for plants. now that’s on reduce, reuse, recycle :)

Something to read: MARSHA by Tourmaline! MARSHA is the first biography of the trans activist, Marsha P Johnson. The book is written in beautiful prose and tells the vibrant story of Marsha P Johnson’s abundant life. Author, Tourmaline, is also an expansive artist and you can learn more about her approach to creativity in this Creative Independent interview.

Something to make: Actually COOL Perler Bead crafts!!! I inherited an extensive collection of perler beads a few years ago because I cannot say no :/ Although they have collected loads of dust in my basement, I am finally ready to put them to use! There are soooo many creative ways to use perler beads that feel totally elevated and not like an eight year old in grown up body (although that’s cool too.) Check out some of my fave pinterest finds

Jenna O’Brien, in a recent substack post, dove deeply into the Magic of the Written Word. Her exploration of all things hand-written propelled me into my own obsession of this wonderful art form.

What I love about Jenna’s discussion of the written word is that she emphasizes the intention of hand-writing, but also the way that leaving notes and writing letters can be both a way to connect and also an intentional art practice.

Liz, the founder of RecCreate, often talks about how baking cakes for her loved ones birthdays is a creative practice that she gets to engage in repeatedly throughout the year. For her it is a dedicated opportunity to express creativity and also a chance to celebrate the people who mean the most to her. I think letter writing can be like this too.

It doesn’t have to be extensive or elaborate to be a creative practice. The wonderful thing about birthdays and other celebrations is they happen continuously throughout the year. If you make a habit of writing a card, or designing some sweet hand-written note for your closest friends/family then a handful of times every year you are engaging in creativity!

And if you’re not the planning type, a spontaneous letter writing practice is just as good (if not better). Just last weekend I wrote a teeny tiny letter to say thank you to a friend for accompanying me on an evening out. It was a simple enough creation on my end, but made for a really sweet (and random!) gesture.

So take this as our invitation and informal encouragement to get out there and start writing things down! love letters! post-it note sweetness! a note on the door of your neighbors apartment! anything and everything is your creative practice :)

with that…
