For the next in-person edition of Reading Room, we’re returning to Hansaviertel, where on August 12 one of Berlin’s most remarkable public libraries will open its doors to us: Hansabibliothek.
Designed by Werner Düttmann as part of Interbau 1957, Hansabibliothek is defined by generous window fronts arranged around a quiet reading courtyard. The building feels both sheltered and open, connected to its surroundings while offering a sense of calm. To us, it’s one of the city’s most inviting places to spend time with books, and we’re excited to spend an evening reading there together.
Our silent reading session will take place in the library’s beautiful garden courtyard, where chairs, blankets, and cushions will be available. Should the weather not cooperate, we’ll move indoors and settle in among the bookshelves instead.
Doors open at 6:00 pm, giving you time to find a spot, grab a drink – non-alcoholic refreshments will be available on a donation basis –, and settle in.
After a short introduction, we’ll begin our silent reading session at 6:30 pm.
An hour later, at 7:30 pm, the space will open up to conversation. You’re invited to exchange thoughts with fellow readers (for those who find approaching strangers a little daunting, we’ve prepared a few conversation cards to help get things started), browse what others have brought along, continue reading, or simply enjoy the atmosphere until the library closes at 8:00 pm.
