One snowy November morning, my beloved niece Leonore Van Ziel tore our cozy New Hampshire home apart searching for her “hand shoes.”

Last week one of my editors caught me up on the lives of her daughters, one just out of college, one in the midst of her college career.

More years ago than I want to think about, during my sometimes misspent youth, everything – absolutely everything - was important: What I was going to be when I grew up, how often I was on my high school’s Dean’s List and which of my friends were on it too.

I only agreed

Last week a painfully well-meaning pal sent me a cake recipe that involved oatmeal – the quick version – a green banana and just enough cocoa powder – like three tablespoons - to lend a brown tinge to the concoction.
