A Thought for the New Year: Maybe Ditch the Plan

January has a familiar rhythm. New year. New plan. New goals neatly arranged in rows and columns—timelines, milestones, success metrics. Planning feels like the responsible start to a new year.

And yet, for many leaders, the plan becomes a source of frustration.

Not because planning is wrong—but because plans quietly assume the world will cooperate.

Most plans invoke an unspoken binary evaluation: on track or behind, right or wrong, working or failing. That kind of thinking is comforting. It simplifies complexity and lowers cognitive load. But it also breaks down quickly in a world full of variables we can’t control.

As explored in CLARITY: Business Wisdom to Work Less and Achieve More, when uncertainty rises, our brains look for tidy explanations. We collapse nuance into judgment. Logic often follows emotion—not to discover truth, but to justify what we feel.

That’s why plans struggle when reality shifts.

Improvisational humor offers a useful contrast. There is no script—only responsiveness. The rule isn’t either-or. It’s YES-AND!

  • Yes, this isn’t what we expected—and here’s what we’ll do next.

  • Yes, the plan gave us direction—and now it needs to evolve.

This improvisational adjustment isn’t abandoning your planning. Don’t let that reaction become yet another binary limitation you place on yourself. It’s simply the introduction of balance: structure without rigidity, clarity without certainty.

So maybe the smartest way to start the year isn’t perfecting the plan.

Maybe it’s loosening our grip on being right.

The plan may change - but your ability to respond well doesn’t have to.
