Really, it’s a few pages, I'm skipping ahead to the next chapter. Linocut, you're not my favorite, but I do appreciate you. I admire artists who turn you into amazing works of art. I was feeling pretty bummed yesterday afternoon and well into today. It seemed like I just wasn't getting it. Of course, I'm not good at it yet but it just wasn't fun and the steps were starting to feel tedious.
After my last posts about Ira Glass's The Gap (keep making lots of shit until it gets less shitty) and then creating an "art school" process for myself, readily accessible feelings of failure were setting in. Then a lightbulb moment, I'm not giving up on the process, in fact, figuring out what you like AND what you don't like is the process.
I remember my first tries at bookbinding many decades ago. There were lots of mistakes and ugly books. I still make some ugly books, but it's mostly fun, and I never feel forced.
So, here's to you Linocut, I will return to occasionally pausing the IG scroll for an ASMR moment of watching someone masterfully, and peacefully carve away. That's a joy.
The final prints. I did learn things about ink and techniques that I know will translate to other endeavors but I’m happy to be moving on.
