A young woman becomes obsessed with the President of the United States, and connives her way into the White House. Their relationship becomes a national scandal, with peace in the Middle East hanging in the balance.
I am referring to Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton, but I could have also been referring to Natalie Harp and Donald Trump.
In July 1995, a major Democratic donor Walter Kaye got a young Lewis & Clark graduate an internship at the White House, the most prestigious position a young person with political aspirations could obtain (Lewinsky had no political ambitions). Starting in November 1995, for eighteen months, Lewinsky had an affair with Bill Clinton (who was attracted to busty brunettes as much as Trump was attracted to tall blondes).
After Lewinsky was transferred from the White House to the Pentagon, she confided about the affair to a colleague, Linda Tripp. Tripp was persuaded by a literary agent (and Republican operative) named Lucianne Goldberg to tape the conversations, and these tapes led to the Starr Report, which then led to the impeachment of Bill Clinton and the derailment of his second term agenda (the major foreign policy objective being the Oslo Peace Accords, which sought to create a two-state solution to end the Israel-Palestine conflict).
This past week, the American public learned about 35-year old Natalie Harp’s obsession with 80-year old Donald Trump. In October 2023, while in New York City, Harp jumped into the trunk of an SUV of Trump’s motorcade rather than be away from him. In 2024, Trump staffers denied a room to Harp at Trump’s Bedminster golf club in New Jersey, and so she slept in the locker room that summer. There is a picture from May 2023 of Harp, like a loyal dog, happily sprinting after Trump as he sped ahead in his golf cart.
