Hey, welcome to the 2nd edition of ‘The Open Letter’! I hope you’re all having a warm and fantastic start to 2025. I want to take a moment to thank everyone for the immense support shown for the first edition of this newsletter—I truly wasn’t expecting that!
So, first, let’s take a look at the cool and unexpected things that happened in the past weeks and last month:
This year’s CES was great as always. It was AI AI AI everything, similar to software and SaaS space, that every company or start-up wants to become an “AI-first company or startup.” The star of the show was Jasen, who showcased NVIDIA’s new GeForce RTX 50 Series graphics cards with a monumental increase in performance compared to the 40 series. Let’s see how scalpers play this time.
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, shared an early version of the next model—OpenAI O3. At the same time, Google also released Gemini 2.0 with some significant improvements.
Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, unveiled GitHub Copilot for VS Code, which will be FREE. You can learn more about it here. I’ve been using it for a while; it’s imperfect and still has some issues, but it gets the job done.
The Git project released Git 2.48. GitHub shared a blog post that broke down some of the most interesting features and changes.
Mac users (including myself) recently faced a false malware alert for Docker Desktop, which has now been fixed with a patch. If you’re still encountering the issue, updating to the latest version, 4.37.2, should resolve it. As stated by the Docker team, the alert was a false positive, and there is no malware in the app. Official announcement.
That was all about announcements.
Last month I attended KubeCon India, and it was awesome. I connected with new people and chatted with those I connected with virtually. As I mentioned in the last edition, I delivered a talk there on Docker Scout and container security, and it’s live on YouTube; you can check that out.
Michael Cade (Yes, the 90DaysOfDevOps person) shared a wonderful course–Gophercises on Twitter. It’s Free and contains videos, during which you will build 20 different mini-applications, packages, and tools designed to teach you something different. It’s AWESOME!
I was exploring WebAssembly, and the potential is mind-blowing. I have added all my learning to my DevOps repo. I also wrote a blog post on Publishing Multi-Arch Docker images to GHCR using Buildx and GitHub Actions; here is a link.
Stephen Blum, CTO @PubNub created a YouTube video and reacted to one of my blogs. Here is the link. It was a fun video. You should definitely check that out if you are in Docker Compose.
