Having spent large chunks of my life living in a country where the new year is the new year for everything - school and university included - it can seem oddly counterintuitive to think about new school years starting in August or September.
But I can see the sense behind a fresh start following a long summer break, and we quickly adjusted when my eldest was at school in England. Then we had to readjust when she went to school in Singapore, which is another ‘January start’ country!
Which brings me to my timely (for those in the Northern hemisphere!) new release - ‘Learn from Life’.
It’s a broadly school-themed collection, but like all of our similar collections, it can be used for much more than that.
Because learning doesn’t stop at the school gates. And it doesn’t stop, no matter how old we get.
One of the scariest catchphrases we use in our family, is ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’. Useful as a reminder, but scary because we can all look back and marvel/cringe at our past ignorance. While knowing there are still things we don’t know that could be lurking to trip us up!
But scrapping how what you’ve learned- or NOT learned - doesn’t have to be profound: here’s my sister and I when our parents fondly dreamed we could learn to play tennis. I couldn’t even hold the racquet properly for the photo!
But it’s true that the lessons as we grow older can be bitter and painful. This photo reminds me of a day when I should have asked more questions, listened to my gut and not be scared to pushing for change. Don’t be fooled by the smiles, there was a LOT going on that day! But we paste those smiles on for the children, don’t we?
