Piney Wood Atlas · Piney Wood Atlas

May, 2017

With our first trip and publication under our belt we were ready to hit the road again nearly a year after our first trip. We once again left from Alicia’s house, but this time snaking our way south and through the desert, visiting 15 residencies through California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona Colorado and New Mexico. We learned a thing or two from our first trip, and with the election results of 2016, we more intentionally sought people who were building their own residencies and communities and spaces which were focused on inclusivity. We were particularly excited about this trip because it was going to take us back to where it all started for us: Elsewhere Studios in Paonia.

Here are some fond memories from that trip:

Making portobello burgers deep in Zion Canyon
Sharing a residency with a mountain lion??
The music and mural-filled hospitality of Chip Thomas
Adobe and red rock houses
Going back to where it all began (our first residency, where we met)
State of the art photo printers and goats at the same residency
Waving sagebrush and wild grasses
Light & sound presentations
The Crochet Museum
A portable canyon
Piñatas and crits with roving college kids
Boondocking in the slickrock
Pets-in-residence
A residency started by friends who met at a residency
Sunset Club in Green River
A fish house reimagined
Feeling like the queens of Zion Canyon
Carolina meets her future partner at a residency along Route 66!!

Thank you to all the residencies we visited:

*Note: Some of these residencies have changed names or locations, or no longer exist. Along with a resource, PWA is an archive as well.
