Why 2025 is Weird

It’s been a weird year, and as an astrologer, I can’t say I’m surprised.

The thing about astrology is it acts like a telescope, providing a closer look at distant vantage points. When we look at charts, astrologers can assess the general vibe of a year, a decade, a month, and even a day. And for many, many years astrologers have had their collective eye on 2025.

The reason 2025 is so unique has to do with the outer planets. As a refresher, in astrology, the planets can be divided into two subsets:

Personal Planets: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn

—>The personal planets have faster planetary speeds, which mean they affect a person on a more nuanced level, as each natal chart contains a unique combination of these planets in various signs.

Outer Planets: Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto

—>Outer planets move much at a much slower rate, which means entire decades are defined by the same planetary combination. For this reason, the outer planets are also referred to as “generational” planets, since they define entire generations of people. For example, many millennials have Pluto in Scorpio, as the planet of transformation was in the sign of intensity from 1983 until 1995.

If we think back to the 80s, 90s, or early 2000s, each decade had a definitive vibe, which is usually attributed to world events, technological advancements, fashion styles, music trends, and political leanings. However, if we look at this from a broader perspective, these events, styles, advancements, and energies were largely dictated by the movement of the outer planets.

As a more recent example, think back to last summer…the Summer of 2024, also known as Brat Summer. Let me paint a picture: everyone doing the Apple dance, Taylor Swift was on the ERAS tour in Europe, ChatGPT was still in its relative infancy, we were gearing up for the BIG election, and food was way less expensive.

In the past 365 days, so much has changed in the world. How can one calendar year feel like a lifetime ago? My answer, is duh, the outer planets.

As I explain to my beginner astrology students, when a planet changes Zodiac signs it’s like they put on a different outfit. Although the actions of the planet remain the same, the new outfit empowers them to express themselves in a different manner.

In the past year, here are the planetary changes we’ve experienced on a collective level:

—>Pluto (the planet of transformation) moved from Capricorn to Aquarius, which is causing AI to transform the way we live, while also catapulting a collective desire for transformation on a humanitarian level. For example, Luigi Mangione shot the United Healthcare executive a few weeks after Pluto moved into Aquarius, prompting a nationwide outcry for more accessible healthcare in the U.S.

—>Neptune (the planet of dreams and delusion) moved from Pisces to Aries, which is giving us a major wake up call collectively. After two decades of illusive Pisces cultural trends (think..the rise of Botox, fillers, and the Kardashians), our boundaries and beauty standards are solidifying, inspiring us to be more fiery, fierce, and courageous.

—>Uranus (the planet of radical change) moved from Taurus to Gemini, which is electrifying how we communicate, changing how we think, supercharging AI technology, and also bringing an added dose of media chaos.

—>Not to mention, Saturn has also moved into Aries and Jupiter into Cancer, which marks personal and collective shifts in our chart.

Things are probably gonna get a little funky thanks to the upcoming retrogrades. In the upcoming months, a majority of the slower-moving planets will retrograde, meaning they will appear to be moving backward in the sky. Retrogrades are not to be feared, but they can make things a little wonky.

The most pivotal moments will likely occur when the planets are at 0 degrees and 29 degrees, both of which are potent degrees in any chart, yet with completely different energies:

• The 0 degree, a critical degree, is like wearing a new sweater that’s itchy. You’re not quite used to it yet because it’s not worn in. When outer planets are at 0 degrees, things feel weird, uncomfortable, and strange.

• The 29 degree, an anoretic degree, is big and bold, with a mission to make you pay attention. When outer planets are at 29 degrees, the energy is urgent, powerful, and forceful.

When they move to 29 degrees, both Neptune and Uranus will retrograde back into the previous signs of Pisces and Taurus, respectively. When this happens, old lessons may crop up that you will finally need to resolve. This can happen both on a collective or personal level, and can be more obvious if the planet in question makes an aspect to your Sun or Moon.

To make matters even more chaotic, we’re starting eclipse season soon. That’s a whole ‘nother story, but basically… things are weird and about to get weirder.
