Hello dear reader,
I feel like it’s been ages since I posted here or on my other Substack - Walks With My Dog. The Hubster and I were gifted some sort of illness from loved ones - probably Covid, and the muse went silent. I’m coaxing her back. My brain feels normal after about three weeks of feeling heavy and blank. No more clogged sinuses beyond my normal allergies. I can smell and taste things again. I’m finding I have to push, though, to free the words from my mind. It’s a bit of a workout, mental and physical, as I had to force myself to sit in my chair and type away on my laptop this morning. Force might seem harsh, but sometimes, tough love is necessary. Otherwise, I’d be parked in my recliner in front of the TV, melting away. I also know that if I continue to not write or edit, this lapse could become a full-on block that might last for months. It’s happened before. Have you ever had writer’s block? How did you handle it?
My creativity needs to be nurtured and managed and coaxed sometimes. It feels like a slog right now, but I want you to know you’re not alone if you, too, feel like you’re mired in mud. Whether it’s illness or injury or the state of our world, if something is holding you back, first acknowledge that you’re stuck. It’s okay. It happens. Then, examine why. What’s going on? What can you do? Would a nice walk help? Do you need to scream? Do you need a drink of water or a bite to eat? Maybe you need a break from social media. Or you simply need to write something, anything. Do you keep a journal? Write a few lines about what’s on your mind. Write something for fun. I dabble in fan fiction to get my creative juices flowing.
Today, I decided to write a little note to you, dear reader. To let you know you’re not alone. It’s a cliche, yes, but it’s true. The interwebs are overflowing with all sorts of folks, and it can be a good thing - if you keep healthy boundaries. Don’t get sucked into the quicksand. The tired part of my brain wants to doomscroll on Twitter or Instagram. Reading about the horrors and injustices and stupidity and cruelty certainly doesn’t help me or anyone - except maybe the ones who want us all to get lost in despair. To abandon our beautiful creativity. Don’t let the world or illness take that from you. The fight is different for all of us, so don’t worry if you can’t follow what the so-called influencers tell you do to.
Right now, I’m gonna change into my workout clothes and ride my exercise bike to nowhere for about 30 minutes before taking Titan on a walk. I need to get my heart pumping. I want to be strong. Exercise helps me keep my head in the game. I admit it's not easy.
Find what works for you and get back out there. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or support.
