I have been trying to think through the question Are There Elves and Fairies Down by River? I hold in mind Eleanor Robbins’, who urges us to see that the challenges of the present time call for ‘our deepest weirdness and our highest intellectual rigour’.

I walk to the old stone bridge over the River Frome and stand for a moment looking over the parapet, arrested by the rippling sound of water running under the arches. It is as if the water asks, “Where have you been?” As I hear this, I feel myself relax, quite spontaneously. Whatever reasons, for better or worse, that brought me here today, now I am here.
