There’s a house on the hill. It didn’t start out there. From 1872 it stood on Fifth Street and served as a faculty residence for St. Mary’s school for girls. Decommissioned and donated by the Episcopal diocese in 1975, it was moved in 1988 from across the village to its current location on Eleventh Street. Now named The Yellow House, it houses an archive, a museum, and a consignment shop.
Sitting adjacent to the west-facing exterior wall is George Loring Hubbell’s safe. The lettering still faintly identifies its prominent owner. The origins of the Hubbell family, descending from Richard Hubbell in A.D. 1086, were comprehensively documented by Walter Hubbell in 1915.
On March 15, 1959, the New York Times began its obituary for Mr. Hubbell as follows:
GARDEN CITY, L. I., March 14-George Loring Hubbell, a banker and realty man prominently associated with the founding of the Village of Garden City, died last night at his home at 6 Cathedral Avenue. His age was 93.
