June’s arrived, and with it Pride season getting underway, a BBQ residency moving into Copeland, and the rooftops above Rye Lane back in action. The weather, meanwhile, has completely lost the plot — straight out of a heatwave and into thunder, showers and one redeemable Friday — but there’s plenty indoors to keep the week good either way.
It’s a queer and quietly experimental week: Pride kicks off at The Old Nun’s Head, an afternoon of LGBTQIA+ history among the gravestones at Nunhead Cemetery, trans-made short films at Staffordshire St, and a drone orchestra playing live for the first time after years in a Croydon flat. Wrap up, check the listings twice, and I’ll see you out there.

Thursday stays mostly cloudy with more showers pushing through — heavy at times, with a risk of thunder and the odd sunnier break in between. Another windy one. Friday is the pick of the week: mainly dry, plenty of sunshine, just a few patches of cloud. Saturday clouds over as showers move in from the west, some falling locally heavy, before turning drier in the evening with some late sunny spells. The annual Friary Road & Ledbury Estate street party is back: a free, all-day community party the organisers (fairly) reckon is the best in Peckham. Black Obsidian Sound System are on sound — the Black, Queer, and Trans Collective who know exactly how to hold a space like this.
It’s a full day of it. Folk of the Round Table open at noon, then Bee Anchor b2b Sham, Bambi, Rosie Riot, Sekuru, Chooc ly, Mark-Ashley Dupe and mellowdramatics, with Jay Jay Revlon closing at 8pm — plus food, games, a bouncy castle, and space for anyone who wants to sell something, run a workshop or bring an activity (just turn up).
There’s an afters lined up too, with a few DJs they’re keeping quiet about.

An album launch to open the week on something properly otherworldly. Utopia Ghost Ensemble — members drawn from Office of Aurora, Spy From Moscow and Astra Forward — bring their debut record to life at The Ivy House, joined by Flo Lines (lo-fi pop that edges into sound art) and the South London Drone Orchestra, playing live for the first time after years of practice in a Croydon flat.
Expect drone, a lot of people singing, and several attempts to render the unknowable as sound. A Thursday night well spent.

A proper holiday-from-the-world evening of trans-made short films at Staffordshire St, with a Q&A afterwards and time to meet other filmmakers and film lovers. The programme’s community-first and curious, with plenty of room to talk.
Free to book, and donations help keep it accessible — so grab a ticket and bring a pal who’s overdue a cinema night that actually feels like it’s for them.

Part comedy show, part theatre, part sweaty club night — Knickers throws the lot together. A line-up of London’s more unhinged alternative comedians, then a dance party to follow. Expect interactive bits, big laughs and a fair amount of chaos.

Bold Tendencies opens its 20th anniversary season with an evening of solo piano from Ryan Wang — an award-winning 18-year-old who’s performed around the world. The programme’s kept a surprise, written for the Steinway grand that sits high above Rye Lane, as the first night of this year’s Euphoria Live programme. Doors 6:30pm. 14+.

An afternoon celebrating LGBTQIA+ history at Nunhead Cemetery with author and activist Dan Glass. Drawing on archival research, local storytelling and queer South East London history from the 1800s to now, Dan leads a 90-minute walking tour across the cemetery’s 52 acres, then gathers in the Anglican Chapel for an oral histories workshop and a performance by the South East London Queer Choir. The day ends with a social at The Old Nun’s Head from 5pm.
Organised by ACT UP London as part of the East Lodge Restoration project, this one also celebrates the late Rex Batten — long-time Friends of Nunhead Cemetery supporter, popular tour guide and author of Rid England of This Plague. Tickets are free but booking is encouraged for the walking tour, as places are limited.

🎷 Grass Roots starring Tom Stringer (Live Jazz) (Thu 4 Jun, 8–11pm, CLF Art Lounge, pay what you can): Monthly night backing young, emerging London jazz. June’s guest is Tom Stringer, a trumpeter, composer and arranger fresh out of Trinity Laban.
🛍️ The Big South London Flea (Peckham Salvage Yard) (Sat 6–Sun 7 Jun, 10am–5pm, Unit 8, Copeland Park, £2): Two-day indoor flea with the Hackney Flea Market crew — rummage-friendly chaos, and worth a second dig on the Sunday.
Leading the week is Tuner (15), the cinema’s own film of the week — and you can see why. Leo Woodall plays a piano tuner with unusually sharp hearing who gets pulled into a criminal gang to help pick locks: a blue-collar virtuoso with a sideline in safe-cracking. Dustin Hoffman co-stars. A tight, well-pitched crime drama that knows exactly what it is.
The big noise, though, is Backrooms (15) — the odd little horror about a doorway that appears in the basement of a furniture showroom, which has somehow stormed to $117.5m worldwide in its opening week. If you grew up on a certain creepy YouTube short, this is pure nostalgia; if you didn’t, the teens in the queue will fill you in.
Also new: Savage House (15), a darkly satirical 18th-century tale with Richard E. Grant and Claire Foy as a pox-era couple chasing the good life through decadence and bloodshed; Scary Movie 6 (15), exactly what it says on the tin (Regina Hall, Anna Faris and Marlon Wayans, back for more bad taste); and Masters of the Universe (12A), the big He-Man reboot landing this week. Plenty still playing for younger ones too, from The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (PG) to The Magic Faraway Tree (U).
A few one-offs worth flagging: Riverdance - 25th Anniversary Show (U) gets a single 25th-anniversary screening on Sun 7 June (8:30pm), and there are advance screenings of alien-conspiracy thriller Disclosure Day (12A) — Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor and Colin Firth — on Wed 10 and Thu 11 June (8:30pm). Subtitled screenings this week: The Mandalorian & Grogu (12A) on Mon 8 June (8:40pm) and Backrooms (15) on Wed 10 June (6pm).

Copeland Social’s getting a proper summer glow-up. The Homie’s Kitchen is in for a three-month residency of fire-led cooking — Indian and Latin flavours, smoke and char — with new dishes landing as the summer goes on and a proper drinks list from the bar.
Bring your people, take a table inside or out in the sun, and stick around — they’ll have the World Cup on too. Full menu still to come; for now, the kitchen fires up today.
