Colorado’s most picturesque cinema experience is officially back this week. A collaborative production of Denver Film and Denver Arts & Venues, the 27th season of Film on the Rocks is bringing a curated lineup of classic comedies and massive blockbusters straight to the iconic Red Rocks amphitheater.
The season kicks off this week with a screening of the beloved 1987 fairy tale adventure, The Princess Bride, on Monday, June 8. Each film is preceded by live entertainment to start the evening off right, and this week features pre-show performances by the School of Rock.
Get up there early, enjoy the music, the sunset, and settle in for a perfect summer movie night under the stars.

The Boulder County Film Commission is back with its next casual networking happy hour!
Hosted by local filmmaker Rob Shearer of Lion Knight Films, it will be an opportunity to connect with other members of the Boulder film community and get a sense of what the independent scene is building here this year.
The mixer features a cash bar and leads directly into a 7:00 PM screening of Bob Fosse’s iconic 1972 Oscar-winning musical, Cabaret, presented as part of the “Classics with Jeffrey Kash” series.
If you plan on staying for the film, be sure to grab your tickets in advance!

Colorado's cinematic history is getting a massive spotlight this summer. To celebrate the state's sesquicentennial, the CO150 Film Festival is launching what they are calling the "biggest binge-watch in Colorado history"—screening 150 of the most iconic films shot in, set in, or created by Colorado talent.
These screenings are taking place at more than 30 independent, community-based venues across the entire state between now and October. You can catch classics in towns all over the state, including Steamboat Springs, Pagosa Springs, Ouray, Pueblo, Durango, Breckenridge, and Silverton. The festival's sprawling lineup is packed with highly recognizable blockbusters and beloved favorites that have deep ties to Colorado, such as Dumb and Dumber, The Hateful Eight, National Lampoon's Vacation, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, BlacKkKlansman, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. If you are hitting the road this summer, we highly recommend checking out their full statewide calendar to catch a classic in one of Colorado’s historic mountain town theaters.
However, you don’t have to leave town to get in on the action. As part of this massive initiative, the Boulder International Film Festival has partnered with the Dairy Arts Center to co-sponsor ten hand-picked screenings right here at home. They are kicking off this stellar local lineup on Tuesday, June 9, with the ultimate Colorado horror classic: The Shining.

The University of Denver is hosting its annual student film showcase, “InShort,” to highlight the incredible projects their students have produced over the last six months as part of their Narrative Filmmaking capstone experience. DU students have quietly built an impressive track record in the region, winning five consecutive Heartland Emmys for both documentary and fiction.
The evening kicks off with light appetizers and refreshments, leading directly into the awards and the screening of five brand-new short narrative films. This year's eclectic lineup explores a wildly creative mix of themes—from supernatural 80s rock bands and demonic trust issues, to the bizarre life-or-death stakes of fraternity culture, the destructive pursuit of internet fame, and the quiet heartbreak of letting go.
If you want to see what the next generation of Colorado filmmakers is building, this is the room you need to be in.

The Film Commission’s next Roundtable is officially on the calendar! These discussions give you a direct seat at the table to talk with fellow professionals and help inform the staff on the industry’s most pressing issues.
The agenda is packed, covering everything from brainstorming new workshops and marketing opportunities to leveraging the Boulder Chamber’s advocacy team to improve the State’s Film Incentive program. They will also be researching a new Boulder County 10% “stackable” tax incentive to supplement the State’s 20% and looking ahead to get involved with the Filmmaker Lounge at the Sundance Film Festival next year.
In addition to the collaborative discussions, the event features a special presentation by Dusty Astrom, VP of Finance and Operations of Citizen Pictures (long-time producer of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives), discussing the changing landscape of reality television and its impact on our industry.

Friday Night Weird is closing out the week with a dose of unadulterated tension. The library is keeping the theater lights dimmed up just enough so you can bring your current knitting, crocheting, or embroidery projects and craft while you watch. Monday, June 15 — Two Women: This film takes us deeply and comically into the lives of two Montreal housewives who are struggling in their marriages and decide to do something about it. It is a sharp, thoroughly modern exploration of relationships and the radical act of creating the life you truly want.
Tuesday, June 16 — Slanted: This profound narrative partners us with a young Chinese-American girl who dreams of being prom queen. The only obstacle to her coronation is that every prom queen before her has been white. The film explores the painful complexities of trying to fit in and the invisible privileges of race in a space historically reserved for her white peers.
