If you are waiting for the perfect budget or the ideal shooting schedule to finally make your movie, this free masterclass on “Urgent Filmmaking” might be worth checking out this week.
The real value of this event is in the execution. Filmmakers Miguel Silveira and Missy Hernandez are breaking down exactly how they pulled off a feature film with only a single day of principal photography. Their doc-fiction hybrid, The Last Election and Other Love Stories, was shot entirely in a 24-hour window in Times Square, running from sunrise on November 3, 2020, to sunrise on November 4.
By following two podcasters who are interviewing the New York crowd to win a $20,000 competition, the film captures a raw, ambitious, and Linklater-esque slice of life. Silveira and Hernandez will be offering actionable insights on how to design, resource, and shoot your own projects right now, rather than waiting for a greenlight.
The evening also features screenings of the award-winning short Devil’s Works and the feature documentary Crying Earth Rise Up. After the credits roll, both directors will host an open Q&A to talk candidly about the realities, challenges, and massive creative rewards of rapid, resource-constrained independent filmmaking.

There is nothing quite like seeing your work, or the work of your peers, projected on the big screen. Denver Community Media is bringing back “First Friday Films”, an evening dedicated strictly to highlighting local storytellers and filmmakers across all genres.
Whether you are submitting your own short narrative, documentary, or experimental project, or just coming to support fellow Colorado creators, this is a fantastic, low-stakes space to share work and talk shop. Every screening block is followed by a 30-minute open forum and Q&A session with the film creators, allowing you to ask direct questions about their production process.
Light snacks will be provided, making it a perfect environment to network and connect with the community.

Summer movie nights are officially in full swing at the plaza. Now entering its second week after a fantastic kickoff last weekend, Little Man Ice Cream in LoHi is back with its beloved “Flick Fridays” outdoor screening series, running every week through September 4th.
This Friday features a stellar animation double-feature under the stars.
8:45 PM – The Gruffalo: A delightful, Oscar-nominated animated short based on the classic picture book. It follows a clever little mouse who invents a terrifying, fictional monster to scare off hungry predators in the deep dark wood—only to come face-to-face with the real thing.
9:15 PM – Zootopia: Disney’s critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning modern classic. Set in a glittering mammalian metropolis, the film follows an idealistic rookie rabbit police officer and a cynical con-artist fox as they form an unlikely partnership to uncover a massive, city-wide conspiracy.
They will have free popcorn on hand, plenty of iconic ice cream available for purchase, and a massive screen set up outside. Be sure to arrive early with your lawn chairs and blankets to secure a prime spot on the plaza before the first short rolls.

As part of their Summer of Discovery series, the Boulder Public Library is hosting a special “Docs After Dark” screening event in the Canyon Theater. This week, they are showing the legendary 1990 documentary Paris is Burning.
Directed by Jennie Livingston, this landmark piece of non-fiction cinema offers an intimate, profound look into the drag ball culture of New York City in the late 1980s. It explores intersecting themes of race, class, and sexuality, documenting the lives of the Black and Latino LGBTQ+ community who built their own fiercely competitive, deeply supportive chosen families. It is an incredible opportunity to revisit a masterful, culturally significant documentary on the big screen, right in the heart of Boulder.

Friday Night Weird returns with Croatia’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards. This inventive hybrid film is a defiantly punk-rock, direct-action history lesson that perfectly fits the late-night weirdness mandate.
