I’m a bit late to this but by now, you probably already know that Polish tennis player Iga Świątek—currently ranked number 3 by the WTA—had her name etched in the honour boards after defeating Amanda Anisimova in straight sets in the Wimbledon finals.
Iga marks the first Polish person to win a Wimbledon trophy—or in this case, the Venus Rosewater Dish—taking home a prize pot of 3 million GBP. And in case you’re wondering, yes: the prize money was the same for both gentleman’s and ladies’ singles tournaments. It also marks the eighth consecutive year that Wimbledon has seen a new female tennis player win the final.
The concluding score of the 57 minute match was 6-0, 6-0. Świątek beat her opponent swiftly—and how. It is definitely unusual for an opponent to not win even a single game in a Wimbledon final. While many news channels attributed nerves for her defeat, Anisimova herself states in this press interview that it was fatigue from past matches and from having practiced the previous day that had worn her down. She stated that her physicality is something she needs to work on. As viewers—especially in tennis—we tend to look at matches in isolation. But in reality, pro-tennis athletes are playing incredibly tough matches, back-to-back in a two-week span leaving very little time for recovery. It makes sense that Anisimova, who wasn’t even expecting to reach the final, experienced fatigue after a fortnight of intense matches.
Before you brush off Anisimova as ‘undeserving of being in the final’, or the match itself being a ‘disaster for women’s sport’—these were comments I saw below Wimbledon’s social media post—, consider that she pulled off one of the most incredible comebacks we’ve ever seen in tennis. For context, prior to last year, her rank fell to 359 after taking a long break from the sport. This year, she made the Wimbledon final after defeating Sabalenka, the reigning champ and world number 1, in the semis.
Amanda Anisimova now holds a rank of number 7 in the world by the WTA.
